Fishing!

One of the advantages of homeschooling... you can take off on a nice fall morning and go fishing with your grandpa.
The kids had all sorts of fun, and apparently they are pretty good at casting their lines into the water, and pulling out fish!! Z caught 7 and E caught 3!!

They also enjoyed the grandfather's perrogative of taking them to McDonalds for breakfast AND lunch on the same day LOL. I'm sure they will remember this day for a long time.

Fall Family Walk

We went walking in a lovely park by the river yesterday. The kids had a marvellous time running through the big trees and rows of thick bushes. There were some wonderful old trees just perfect for climbing (and picture taking), and they had fun making crayon rubbings of the bark and collecting leaves.

Later on, we spent a fair amount of time throwing rocks into the river, and then headed off to the slurpee store for the before-promised treat.

All in all, a nice fall afternoon.

Normal?

My little 4 year old girl is so excited because today is her first day of joining the girls choir that her sister has been in for 3 years.
She keeps trying on new outfits to wear, and just recently came down with some hair accessories.

"Mommy can you put this barrette in my hair?"

"Sure honey... there. You look so pretty!... you look like your big sister!"
(she scrutinizes herself for a few seconds)...

"No, actually I look like a normal person."

"What's a normal person?" (and what does that make her big sister? LOL

"Oh, I don't know." she says, nonchalantly and then after a mere 60 seconds of being a normal person, she takes it off and declares she doesn't want to wear it anymore.

I wonder if she thinks I am a normal person. hmmm...

New bike!

Feeling sorry for his little preschooler who couldn't keep up with the big kids, daddy decided to use his RBC Points to purchase a fancy new tricycle for H this summer. It's red and silver and shiny with a bell and a horn, and a seat on the back to take friends with you. She loves it.... but (and couldn't you see this coming?) the TWINS love it more. You should see P whiping around the driveway and sidewalk on this thing. Looks like daddy needs to start saving his points again so he can buy another one.

H (and all the kids really) has spent the summer playing all day at the park across the street with the neighborhood kids. Within one block of our house there are 5 girls close to the kids age, and 1 boy for Z. Including our kids, there can be a mob of over 10 kids at the park at one time playing tag, chase-the-girls, catch the butterflies, and other inventive games. What a fun summer! Even the twins got to enjoy the fun by being scary dragons that chase the other kids around up and down the slide.

This is just the sort of fun that children love. Warm sunny days outside, close to home, but far enough away that they are in their own little world. Thank you God for giving us this wonderful house and wonderful neighborhood!

Week 4!

With a new baby on the way shortly (I am 34 weeks pg already!), I decided to start school a little early. The kids were a little unhappy about the idea at first, but as we quickly fell into a rhythym, everyone has been enjoying the new structure that school gives to our days.

Z is in grade 1 already, and is doing a fantastic job of all of his work, although he detests reading lessons (but we are persevering because we know that there is a light at the end of the tunnle and he is improving every day).

E is in grade 4 (can't believe how old she is getting). She has been enjoying her schoolwork this year too.

H is in preschool and is learning new things all the time. She loves letters and enjoys copying words from all over the house, and making up her own words.

The twins... well, let's just not talk about them right now LOL. They are quite a pair, and enjoy getting into mischeif. This is a whole new post of its own.

Here's our plans for this year... i'll start with grade 4 and do grade 1 when i have more time.

Grade 4

Math: Horizons 4 (still working great for us)

Spelling: All About Spelling (starting at level one for review and working through the rest of the

4 books as time allows... the kis LOVE this new spelling program and look forward to it each day)

Copywork: Memoria Press Cursive copywork book. (E is just practicing her cursive formation here)

Latin: Latina Christiana 1 (this is going great this year).

Writing/grammar: Writing Tales 2 (we love this program... I wish I had found it last year, and I wish she would write higher levels of the program... it's a great gentle introduction to writing).

History: History odyssey level 1, Early Modern Times

Science: Exploring Creation with Astronomy (2009 is the International Year of Astronomy and we are having fun already... posts on this to follow)

Art/nature study: Hearts and Tress Kits (more on this later... we are loving these mom-friendly kits for nature and art study. )

I tried so hard to get a cute picture of the two of them....do you KNOW how hard it is to get two 2 year old boys to smile (facing the same direction) at the same time??

Why do I torture myself? I think I just need to take a bunch and then get my dear mother to photshop them for me!!! The first picture is where I'm saying 'smile!' and they are saying 'NO'. Not off to a good start.

The thrid picture is to trick you... did you notice they switched places? This is because they ran away chasing leaves and I had to threaten them with going home if they didn't sit down and smile. Now JP is throwing leaves.

In the fourth picture they were actually both smiling, but just as I pressed the button, P burped (their latest skill they are proud of). sigh.... but the final picture was the best one of all....

I decided to play the game their way. Instead of telling them to smile, or say 'cheese' I resorted to telling them to say 'Poop!' and I finally got some smiles.... well sort of. Maybe next year we'll get some better 1st day pictures.

One of the things I love about the twins

Is how when they want to come inside after being in the backyard for awhile, instead of yelling at me, calling for me, or just plain banging on the door, they stand there side-by-side sweetly pretending to be doorbells, going 'Ding Dong! Ding Dong! Ding Dong!'.

They truly do love sound effects. I think 90% of their language is made up of sound effects. For such a long time, everything they said was an immitation of our intonation. No words, just 'uhhhh' with the correct ups and downs in their voice, so we knew what they were talking about.

We knew they were saying such things like: 'my turn' (me me), '*I'm* being good', 'I didn't do it -HE did it!'....

And the sound effects: a Big anything is 'Hooowaaaah!'. A little anything is a 'baby' (like hooowah tree, baby tree). Trains are 'dootch dootch', cars are 'beep beeps', cats are 'meow', horses are 'neighs', cows are 'moos', etc...

First Day of School

Blogging has been sparse, I know. I had a really hard spring where I was feeling overwhelmed all the time, very very tired and super-antisocial. I took the first two months of summer to relax, rest and remember the joy that I can find in the midst of daily life with my crazy little family.

I'm feeling much better now, remembering to live one day at a time.

I can hardly believe it, but I'm 31 weeks pregnant already, and we've started school again for the next year. I plan to take a few weeks off when the baby comes, so we started early.

Yesterday was the first day.

Grade 4 for Elizabeth, Grade 1 for Z, and my own preschool class of 3 monkeys.

Here are a few pictures. We had fun at the park, soaking in the sunshine, and I tried in vain to get all 5 kids looking at me and smiling at the same time:

Oh when did she get so sophistocated?

Grandma and Grandpa took E to the museum this week to view an exhibit by Joe Fafard, a fabulous Canadian sculptor.   She had a great time looking at all of the detail in his work, and later playing in the discovery room.

Anyways, when she got home, she showed me a flip book that illustrated how he created a huge horse image in a field of various different grains.  It's only recognizable from the air, and it's quite interesting. 

I joked with her about how it wasn't gluten free, and she shot back, quite quickly:

"You know, that's not exactly the point, mom"....  "It's ART, not food!".

This from a tiny little 8 year old, who apparently is growing up faster than I thought LOL.

a wee update

We've been busy with school these last few months getting down to the basics of:

• reading (Z is doing so good now!),
  
• learning to write letters (little H is now 4 and wants to do school everyday, so we've been following Serendipity plans for Along the Alphabet Path.)
  
• grammar (E is slowly working her way through First Language Lessons 3...)
  
• history (The middle ages)
  
• math (E is starting to learn long division already. Z is almost done his Horizions K book, H is learning about big/small, long/short)
  
• latin (the verbs to be, to be able to, the Lord's Prayer, the Table Blessing, The Sanctus, Gloria, and lots of vocab)
  

E is still in choir and piano lessons, and getting ready for her final concert and her piano recital. I can't believe the year is passing so quickly.

I am going to be an AUNTIE!! Woohoo!! My little sister is pg and due two weeks before me. This fall will prove to add lots of excitement to our little side of the world.

We have just about made it through the spring rush of birthdays and holidays. We still have my dad's birthday, my birthday, mother's and father's day, and sean's mom's birthday. Then early on in the summer is my mom, grandma, and brother-in-law. Phew! What a busy time of the year.

Anyways, here are some of the latest art creations. E has been inspired by the flower fairy book to draw and paint some of them, and there are always veggie tales drawings on the fridge from various kids.

Z has become quite the little artist as well.. this picture is a creation for the girls. It was a surprise for them. He worked very carefully in the homeschooling room for quite a while before he proudly gave it to them. What a sweetie!

Happy Easter!

This blog has had many seasons. Some busy and full of pictures, some bursting with homeschooling goodness, and some slow, and restful breaks.  

I allowed myself time during Lent this year to take a slow, restful break from the internet. It was very good and given me space to just be.  

What have we been up to all this time?

A new baby is on the way for October!! That's certainly exciting news around here :-)  The kids are beyond excited and we are slowly trying to wrap our minds around the twins not being the 'babies' anymore.

We moved them into the same bedroom and they have since been delighting in each other's company day and night, and late night.  I love listening to them on the baby monitor.  Their favorite game is to take off all their blankets, sheets, clothes and diapers and toss them overboard onto the floor (they are still in cribs). 

Z just turned 6. Can you believe it?  And H my baby just turned 4.  Easter was lovely. We had lots of family over for an early supper and then celebrated the birthday kids with goodies, presents and cake.  

I finally made a birthday cake that didn't fall over, ooze all over the edges of the plate, or make people laugh.  My life is complete.

I've been gardening a lot this spring.  The new greenhouse is a delight, and I can't wait for my husband to build me some raised beds in there so I can get my little baby plants into the ground soon.

I'm growing tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli (for the big garden we have yet to dig up), lettuce, sugar pumpkin, peas, delphinium, lobelia, painted daisy, and a few more.  We'll see if I kill them all before harvest time, or if I can manage to actually be a real gardener this summer.  I don't have a heater for my greenhouse, and since it still keeps dropping below zero at night, I've been bringing my babies inside each night.  ... and then of course today it's SNOWING. argh! When is it going to be spring?????

Small Successes

Small Successes: from Faith and Family:  

...all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. 

Blogging has been light these last few weeks. Lots has been going on away from the computer

1. I am drastrically reducing my computer time for lent: a brief check of email in the morning before breakfast if there's time, and then a short 30 min time, after lunchtime after my rosary.

2. Because I have been not on the computer all day (grin), I have had time to do all the laundry in the house, put it all away, vaccuum, and make homemade gluten free oreo cookies!!

3.  We made it to daily mass two days in a row this week.  Tues night was the pancake supper by the Knights of Columbus for Mardi Gras, and  Weds night was ash weds.  Amazingly, the twins were very well behaved!  I love going to mass midweek.  It's just the thing I need to help me get through long days.

Outside My Window...  Sunny, but cold.  A light dusting of snow over the bird feeder.  

I am thinking... so many things on my mind this past month.  

I am thankful for... all the clean laundry in my house!

From the learning room... The Periodic Table of the elements, Division, Robert Frost, consonant clusters, prepositional phrases...

From the kitchen... Gluten free popovers (yummy!)

I am wearing... cotton skirt and tshirt, with a little apron tied on over top. My hair is up in a bun and my bangs need trimming. My little toes are cold so I should probably put on some socks. I need some slippers.

I am creating... order in my day: up at 6:15 for prayers, laundry before breakfast, rosary after lunch, computer time after rosary, bedtime at 9:30.

I am going... to Ash Wednesday mass in 2 days. Lent is coming oh so quickly!! 

I am reading...  Surrender by Carmen Marcoux ( a great catholic fiction about courting instead of dating)

I am praying... for a few special prayer intentions.

I am hearing... kids playing quietly in the living room, the hum of all the electronic gadgets that make my life easier (?), and the heater kicking in because my toes are cold!

Around the house... laundry is done and folded, waiting to be put away, my valentine's flowers are still pretty on the table, and school is done for the day!

Some of my favorite things... chicken noodle soup (homemade), good chats with friends over a warm drink, naps.

A few plans for the rest of the week... deciding on our lenten sacrifices, ash weds mass, choir concert on the weekend for E.

Small Successes

...all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. 

Here's mine:

1. I washed the kitchen floor and the mudroom floor. I sure didn't feel like it. I wanted to stay with my feet up on the desk reading all the amazing blogs out there... but I did it anyways!!

2. I homeschooled every day I wanted to this week.  We got math, spelling, religion, history, grammar, writing and art done!

3. I actually completed this blog post!! I really haven't been feeling very inspired to blog as of late, and I'm proud of myself for taking the time to get it done :-)  (where's my gold sticker?)

There! That wasn't so hard... and now I'm feeding the kids, it's almost bed time and I can soon curl up in bed with a good book.  Have a great day everyone!

Than we ever knew

This past valentines day was very special.  Daddy disappeared early in the morning and came back with his arms full of gifts for everyone:  McDonald's breakfast, helium balloons for the boys, flowers for the girls and chocolate and cards for everyone.  We had a lovely morning and everyone felt so special.    Later in the day, we all got ready to go to a family valentine's dance where they were serving wild game (boar, bison, hamburgers for the kids).  

Wanting to wish my dear grandma a happy valentine's day, I phoned her in the afternoon and we chatted for a long time.   She told me how her neighbor had been sick, and about her brother who was in the hospital with cancer... and how, not wanting either of them to feel sad on valentine's day, she had some simple flowers sent.  

I realized then, that this sweet woman, who had spent her life taking care of the people around her and giving her love to many many people, was probably sitting at home all by herself without her OWN flowers to cheer her up.  You see, my dear grandpa Pete had passed away a few years ago and she had moved to the city to live in a little condo by herself.

So we quickly changed our afternoon plans: the kids got busy making beautiful cards for grandma, and we got everyone ready to jump into the van and run to a last-minute flower shop before the dance started.  

Just as we were about to leave, little H the 3 year old comes running into the room with a big gift bag in her hands.  

"mommy! I have a present for Grandma!!"   

Upon further investigation, I discovered she was giving away an airplane tower from the Thomas the Tank Engine set in the basement.  

"hmmm... Well, don't you think she might like something a little more pretty?  She's a girl, remember? And girls like pretty things".

"Oh! I KNOW!!" ...and she took off running, coming back shortly with a beautiful doll from her prized collection that she recently acquired from a big girl at church.  She just loves these dolls.

We set off for grandma's house.  All the big kids got out, proudly rang the doorbell, waiting impatiently with their arms laden with gifts. Little H was holding the flowers, a card and her doll.  I'm sure it warmed Grandma's heart to see this crowd of admirers standing on her front porch in the snow.  

When it was H's turn, Grandma opened the gift, and H just beamed with joy... and then quietly said:

"Can you give it back on Thursday?"

Well... she IS only three :-)

now that's serious!

H: I'm never going to ever play with you again!!

Z: Oh yeah! I'm NEver ever ever going to play with you ever again, even when the whole world starts over.

Kindness always finds its way back to you

E came home from art class with a Ring-pop. Basically a HUGE diamond ring made out of candy.  She was so distraught over when to eat it because she didn't want to share, but she didn't want to wait until everyone was having naps tomorrow.

Fast forward to after supper time when the kids were tasked with cleaning up the entire kitchen and table, loading everything into the dishwasher and wiping down the table (isn't it great having little kids to help out?).   E decided to be generous, and let Z have 3 licks of her ring pop.  

He was so inspired by her kindness that he gave her a beaming smile, and told her "it's all right, E... you go play. I'm going to clean up the whole kitchen by myself for you !".

What sweet little things.  See how a tiny speck of generosity (3 measely licks) can bring out the best in others?  I love kids.

Here's mine:

1. I was sick all last week, and this week the kids have taken turns with the tummy flu... I'm tired!! But tonight before going to bed with a good book, I decided to take the time to clean up so I could start the day fresh with an empty dishwasher and a tidy house.  That wasn't so hard afterall!

2. I ordered our new Vacation Bible School Curriculum for next year (so excited about doing one on St. Paul and the underground church in ancient Rome... ties in nicely with our history curriculum this year)... and we set the dates.  

3. I vacuumed the floors upstairs in all the bedrooms and straightened the kids bookshelves.. it's so nice and organized!!  It's amazing how many books you can find under beds and blankets and in closets and behind dressers when you start to look!!

How has your week gone?  It's easy to feel deflated by long weeks... especially in dreary february when winter is slow to end and the piles of schoolwork are slow to decrease.   For me, I'm looking to simplicity, in doing one small thing at a time.  I can do anything if I view it that way!!

Bird Watching

 

Today we were surprised to see two biggish birds walking around under our spruce tree in the front yard. After looking in our bird books, we decided it was a Gray Partridge. There have been flocks of these around our neighborhood, and they are really cute. Pretty tame, and they just waddle here and there with all their little ones following behind.
